THE PROBLEM
Why I built LumoStep
Many busy professionals want to eat healthier to improve their energy, focus, and health.
But for vegetarians, this is even harder, as they often do not get all the required nutrients.
“I want to eat healthy, but I don’t know where to start.”

1.
“I want to eat healthier so that I can focus on my work.”

2.
“Let’s find an app that can help me eat healthier.”

3.
“This is such a complicated app. It might take a lot of my time.”

4.
“Anyway, I am hungry. Let’s eat the chips.”

5.
“Maybe I’ll start eating healthy from next week when I have time.”

6.
“What if there is an app that can help me build healthier food habits?
THE CHALLENGE
Defining the core design challenges
How might we help busy vegetarian professionals:
Add healthy foods in their lifestyle
Build healthy habits without pressure
Stay consistent
REASEARCH AND DISCOVERY
Process to find the solution
Before designing LumoStep, I deep-dived into the research to understand the real problems and frustrations of the users.
Here are some key process snippets of my approach.
Information found through secondary research
Before starting the project, I needed to figure out if there was a need for my app in the market. So I started with the secondary research to understand the problem space.
There are apps like HealthifyMe and MyFitnessPal, but they are focused on people who want to gain weight or lose weight by tracking nutrients and following diet plans.
There are millions of searches regarding vegetarian protein sources, iron foods, and vegetarian food. People are still searching to find out what to eat and how to eat.
Information I got to know about users through primary research
Users are frustrated with tracking calories. They want something simple that can help them in a personalized way.
They want a way that can help them incorporate foods into their lifestyle without being overwhelmed.
IDEATION
Features I ideated to get to the solution
Keeping users' frustration in mind, I started ideating the solutions that can solve user problems.
THE SOLUTION
What I designed and why
Adding healthy foods in their lifestyle
Show nutritional value to build confidence in food choices
Added benefits to let them decide if they want to add that particular food item to their lifestyle.
Add quick, tasty, 2-step recipes with no overwhelm
Gamifying Habits through Food Quests
Every quest has its own mascot (emotion + personality)
Users earn progress as they complete small steps
Firefly Mascot: Represents hope, small wins, and consistent progress
Gamification to keep users motivated
7-day habit streak, small commitment
Awards for achievements
Secret scrolls for excitement
Gentle nudges to complete the quests
Achievements by the users to keep them encouraged for the quests
Users can track their streak details as per their chosen quests.
They can check scrolls whenever they want.
They can track their awards as per quests.

LEARNINGS AND REFLECTION
What I learned through LumoStep
How might we help busy vegetarian professionals:
Built a system that’s logical, personal, and joyful
Learned how to bridge behavior design + emotional UX
Learned that design decisions are better when I focus on users rather than just features.
If I had more time, I would
Test with more users to validate emotional engagement
Expand quests with community layer
